National Pet Wellness Month: Keeping Pets Healthy All Year Long
When you’re fortunate enough to include a pet as a member of the family, there’s always something to celebrate. Take a little extra time with them this month; October is National Pet Wellness Month!
National Pet Wellness Month started being observed annually in October over twenty years ago thanks in part to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). This month is meant to encourage pet owners to improve the health of their pets by recognizing the important role preventative care plays in their overall wellbeing.
Like their human companions, pets benefit from a comprehensive approach to their health and wellbeing. National Pet Wellness Month is a great opportunity to review your dog and/or cat’s wellness and nutrition needs with your veterinarian and re-assess regular routines to make sure your pet is still living their best lives.
Here are some ways you can celebrate National Pet Wellness Month with your four-legged best friends:
1. Gifts With a Purpose
a. Pets enjoy a surprise gift just as much as we do! A great toy can do more than make tails wag. Mental stimulation and enrichment can curb less-than-desirable behaviors caused by boredom while keeping brains healthy and active. Look for toys that inspire thought as well as movement. Make sure to choose toys best suited for your pets’ specific breed and size, as well.
2. Happy Hygiene
a. Every pet can benefit from a regular grooming routine. A good grooming session also provides great one-on-one time that leaves them glowing from the inside out. And while you’re at it, a nice dental treat afterwards can provide a delicious reward that cleans and delights. Recent studies have estimated that more than 80% of dogs and more than 85% of cats over the age of three suffer from dental disease which can lead to major problems down the road.
3. Centered on the Plate
a. Over the last decade, more and more research has come to light about how nutrition is an essential building block to our overall wellbeing. The same could be said for pets. With so many innovative offerings in the pet food world, it has never been easier to find an option best suited to your pet’s specific needs and diet. This is a great topic to cover with your veterinarian at your pet’s annual appointment. Get their recommendation and then check out Armor Animal Health’s selection of Dog and Cat Foods online!

a. We know calendars fill up quickly; let National Pet Wellness Month be the reason you stop delaying calling your veterinarian to schedule your pet’s annual wellness exam.
